The LORD completes His tabernacle instructions by naming the men who will build it: Bezalel, of the tribe of Judah, whom God has filled with the Spirit of God, with ability, intelligence, knowledge, and all craftsmanship in gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood. He appoints Oholiab, of the tribe of Dan, to work alongside him, and He grants skill to all the able men so they may make everything commanded-the tent of meeting, the ark, the furnishings, the priestly garments, and the anointing oil and incense. Then the LORD turns to the Sabbath, commanding Israel to keep it as a sign between Him and them throughout their generations, that they may know He is the LORD who sanctifies them. The Sabbath is holy; whoever profanes it or works on it shall be put to death, for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth and on the seventh He rested and was refreshed. Finally, God gives Moses the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone written with the finger of God. The chapter thus closes the instruction section on the twin notes of Spirit-empowered work and covenant rest.
This chapter reveals that true worship and holy craftsmanship are not merely human achievements but gifts of the Spirit of God, the first explicit filling of the Spirit for a task in Scripture, anticipating how the Spirit equips the church for building God’s dwelling among men (1 Corinthians 12). The Sabbath sign points backward to creation and forward to the eternal rest secured in Christ, who is Lord of the Sabbath and in whom the weary find true refreshment (Hebrews 4:9-10). The tablets written by the finger of God display the divine authorship of the law that Christ would perfectly keep and fulfill on our behalf. Set immediately before the golden calf narrative, the glory of this generous provision heightens the tragedy of Israel’s coming rebellion. God graciously supplies both the pattern and the power for His people to dwell with Him.
