Ephesians themes
Ephesians develops God’s eternal plan, grace, the church, one new humanity, and the worthy walk.
1. God’s Eternal Plan
Salvation flows from God’s purpose set before the foundation of the world — to choose, adopt, and redeem a people, and to “unite all things” in Christ. History is moving toward the summing up of everything in Him.
2. Salvation by Grace Through Faith
Once “dead in trespasses,” believers are made alive, raised, and seated with Christ purely by God’s mercy: “by grace you have been saved through faith... not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
3. The Church, Christ’s Body and Bride
The church is central to God’s plan — the body of which Christ is head, the temple in which God dwells by the Spirit, and the bride Christ loved and gave Himself for. Individual salvation is into a corporate people.
4. One New Humanity
Christ has broken down the wall between Jew and Gentile, reconciling both to God in one body and creating “one new man.” The gospel makes former enemies fellow citizens and members of God’s household.
5. The Worthy Walk
Because of such grace, believers are to “walk in a manner worthy of the calling” — in unity, holiness, love, light, and wisdom — putting off the old self and putting on the new, and ordering all relationships under Christ.
6. Spiritual Warfare
The Christian life is a battle against “the spiritual forces of evil,” to be fought not with human strength but by standing firm in “the whole armor of God,” clothed in truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, the word, and prayer.
