The Preacher describes the bitter vanity of a man to whom God gives wealth, possessions, and honor, yet not the power to enjoy them, so that a stranger consumes it all. Better, he says, is a stillborn child than a long life without good. He underscores how little a fleeting, shadowy life can grasp, and how man cannot dispute with the One stronger than he.
