The Preacher counsels bold, generous, diligent living amid uncertainty: “Cast your bread upon the waters,” sow in the morning and evening, for you do not know what will prosper, since God’s ways in the world are past finding out. He urges the young to rejoice and enjoy life, yet with the sober reminder that “God will bring you into judgment,” and so to remove vexation and put away pain while walking in the ways of the heart under God’s eye.
