Deuteronomy themes
Deuteronomy develops the themes of loving God with all the heart, exclusive loyalty to the one God, remembering, grace and election, the covenant choice, and the coming Prophet.
1. Love God with All Your Heart
At the heart of Deuteronomy is the Shema and its call to love the LORD with all your heart, soul, and might. The covenant is not mere external law-keeping but a relationship of wholehearted love and loyalty to the one true God, flowing from His prior redeeming love. Jesus names this the greatest commandment.
2. One God, One Loyalty
Because “the LORD our God, the LORD is one,” Israel must worship Him alone and utterly reject the idols of the nations. Deuteronomy relentlessly warns against idolatry and calls for exclusive devotion, centralizing worship at the place God chooses and demanding the removal of every rival.
3. Remember and Do Not Forget
Over and over Moses charges Israel to remember what God has done and not to forget Him, especially when they are prosperous and at ease. Memory guards faith; forgetting God is the root of apostasy. They are to teach His words diligently to their children so each generation clings to the covenant.
4. Grace and Election, Not Merit
Israel’s standing rests entirely on God’s love and choice, not on their size, strength, or righteousness. “It was not because you were more in number... but because the LORD loves you” (7:7-8); “not because of your righteousness” (9:4-6). The land is a gift of grace, and obedience is the grateful response of the redeemed.
5. Blessing and Curse: The Covenant Choice
Deuteronomy sets before Israel life and death, blessing and curse, and urges them to “choose life” by loving and obeying God. Faithfulness brings blessing in the land; rebellion brings curse and, ultimately, exile. This covenant framework shapes the entire story of Israel that follows.
6. A Prophet Like Moses and the Word Near You
Moses looks beyond himself to a coming Prophet to whom Israel must listen, and beyond the present failure to a day when God will circumcise their hearts to love Him. The law is not too hard or far off; the word is near, in the mouth and heart — promises that reach their fulfillment in Christ and the new covenant.
