Moses describes two acts of worship for life in the land. When Israel brings the firstfruits of the harvest, each worshiper is to recite a confession that rehearses the whole story of redemption: “A wandering Aramean was my father,” who went to Egypt, where Israel was enslaved and oppressed, and cried to the LORD, who brought them out with a mighty hand and gave them this land. Bringing the third-year tithe for the Levite and the poor, the worshiper declares that he has obeyed God’s commands. The chapter, and the body of the law, closes with the covenant summary: the LORD is Israel’s God, and Israel is “a people for his treasured possession,” holy to Him.
The firstfruits confession is a beautiful model of worship as grateful remembrance: the worshiper does not merely give produce but recounts the mighty acts of God, locating his own harvest within the great story of redemption from slavery to inheritance. Gratitude flows from remembering what God has done. This liturgy of memory guards against the pride and forgetfulness that prosperity breeds, and it draws the whole community, including the Levite and the sojourner, into rejoicing before God. The closing declaration seals the covenant relationship at the heart of Deuteronomy: God has taken Israel as His treasured possession, and Israel is to be a people holy to Him — a mutual belonging fulfilled in the church, “a people for his own possession,” called out of darkness into His light.
