Moses continues his impassioned appeal, urging Israel to love the LORD and keep His commandments, reminding them that they, unlike their children, have seen with their own eyes God’s mighty deeds in Egypt and the wilderness. He describes the promised land as one that “drinks water by the rain from heaven,” a land God cares for and watches over, whose fruitfulness depends on Israel’s faithfulness. Again he charges them to lay up God’s words in heart and soul, teach them to their children, and bind them as reminders. Finally, he sets before them the great choice that will dominate the rest of the book: “Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse” — blessing for obedience, curse for turning away.
The chapter presses home the themes of love, obedience, memory, and instruction, but it adds a vivid picture of dependence: unlike Egypt, watered by human irrigation from the Nile, Canaan depends on rain from heaven, so that Israel’s very survival in the land will teach them daily reliance on God, whose provision is tied to their covenant faithfulness. The repeated command to internalize and transmit God’s words underscores that faith is kept alive only through the heart and across the generations. And the setting of blessing and curse “before you today” frames the whole of life as a momentous, ongoing choice, calling Israel to decide, again and again, whom they will love and serve.
