Daniel themes
Daniel develops God’s sovereignty, faithfulness under persecution, the everlasting kingdom, and resurrection hope.
1. The Sovereignty of God Over the Nations
The great refrain of Daniel is that “the Most High rules the kingdom of men.” God raises up and removes kings, ordains the rise and fall of empires, and holds all history in His hand, so that His people need not fear the powers of the age.
2. Faithfulness Under Persecution
Daniel and his friends model courageous, uncompromising loyalty to God in a hostile culture, refusing to defile themselves or worship idols even at the risk of death. The book calls believers to faithful obedience whatever the cost.
3. God’s Protection and Deliverance
From the furnace to the lions’ den, God shows Himself present with and mighty to deliver His faithful ones. Even when deliverance is uncertain, His people trust that “our God whom we serve is able to deliver us.”
4. The Everlasting Kingdom of God
Against the passing kingdoms of men, Daniel proclaims a kingdom that God will set up that “shall never be destroyed,” given to the Son of Man and to the saints of the Most High. This kingdom is the goal toward which history moves.
5. Prophecy and God’s Control of History
Through detailed visions of coming empires and events, Daniel reveals that God knows and governs the future. His ability to declare “what will be in the latter days” proves that He, not the idols or emperors, rules time itself.
6. Resurrection and Hope
Daniel looks beyond suffering and death to the resurrection, when those who sleep will awake, some to everlasting life. This hope anchors the faithful, assuring them that their perseverance is not in vain.
