3 John themes
3 John develops walking in truth, hospitality, love in action, and imitating good over evil.
1. Walking in the Truth
John’s greatest joy is to hear that his children are “walking in the truth.” Truth is not merely believed but lived out, and Gaius exemplifies it in his faithful, loving conduct toward gospel workers.
2. Hospitality and Supporting Gospel Work
Believers who welcome and provide for traveling missionaries “for the sake of the name” become “fellow workers for the truth.” Supporting those who carry the gospel is itself a vital and honorable ministry.
3. Faithful Love in Action
Gaius’s love is shown not “in word or talk but in deed,” through practical, generous care for fellow believers, even strangers. Genuine Christian love expresses itself in concrete acts of service.
4. The Danger of Pride and Love of Preeminence
Diotrephes, “who likes to put himself first,” shows how pride corrupts: refusing hospitality, slandering others, and dominating the church. The love of power and position is a grave danger to Christian leadership.
5. Imitating Good, Not Evil
“Do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God.” Believers are to model their lives on what is good, which reveals their true relationship to God.
6. Faithful Partnership in the Gospel
The letter portrays the church as a network of partnership, where those who cannot travel support those who do, and where good reputation, mutual love, and cooperation advance the truth together.
