Ahithophel counsels a swift night attack to kill David alone, but Hushai, to buy time, argues for a grand, delayed assault, and the LORD ordains that Absalom follow the worse advice to bring disaster on him. Hushai secretly warns David to cross the Jordan at once. Ahithophel, seeing his counsel spurned and the revolt doomed, sets his house in order and hangs himself.
