2 Peter themes
2 Peter develops growth in godliness, the reliability of Scripture, false teachers, and Christ’s return.
1. Growth in Grace and Godliness
God’s divine power grants everything needed “for life and godliness,” so believers must “make every effort” to grow, adding to their faith virtue, knowledge, self-control, and love, confirming their calling and election.
2. The Reliability of Scripture
The prophetic word is fully trustworthy, for “no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation”; rather, “men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” God’s word is a sure light in a dark place.
3. The Danger of False Teachers
Peter warns of teachers within the church who bring “destructive heresies,” deny the Master, exploit believers through greed, and live in sensuality. Their judgment is certain, and the church must not follow them.
4. The Certainty of Christ’s Return
Against scoffers who mock His delay, Peter affirms that “the day of the Lord will come like a thief.” God’s patience, not slowness, accounts for the delay, granting time for repentance.
5. The Day of the Lord and the New Creation
The present heavens and earth are reserved for judgment by fire, but believers await, “according to his promise... new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” This hope shapes holy living.
6. The True Knowledge of Christ
The whole letter revolves around “the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” — the true, saving, transforming knowledge that grounds godliness and perseverance, and in which believers are to grow to the end.
