2 Corinthians themes
2 Corinthians develops comfort in affliction, the new covenant ministry, reconciliation, and weakness.
1. Comfort in Affliction
God is “the God of all comfort,” who comforts His people in their troubles so that they can comfort others. Paul’s sufferings, shared with Christ, become a channel of comfort and a display of God’s power.
2. The Glory of the New Covenant Ministry
The ministry of the new covenant, though carried in weakness, surpasses the fading glory of Moses, for it is the ministry of the Spirit that gives life and transforms us into Christ’s image “from one degree of glory to another.”
3. The Ministry of Reconciliation
In Christ, God reconciled the world to Himself, not counting our trespasses against us, and He has entrusted His people with “the ministry of reconciliation,” making them ambassadors who plead, “Be reconciled to God.”
4. Treasure in Jars of Clay
The gospel treasure is carried in fragile human vessels, so that the surpassing power is seen to belong to God, not us. Weakness, affliction, and even dying become the very means by which the life of Jesus is shown.
5. The Grace of Generous Giving
Giving to those in need is a “grace,” modeled on Christ, who became poor to make us rich. God loves a cheerful giver and supplies the giver abundantly, so that generosity overflows in thanksgiving to God.
6. Power Made Perfect in Weakness
Against those who boast in strength, Paul boasts in his weaknesses, for the Lord says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Christ’s strength rests on the weak who depend on Him.
