1. Sound Doctrine Versus False Teaching

Paul charges Timothy to guard the church against false teachers and their myths and speculations, and to hold fast to sound doctrine that accords with the glorious gospel. The truth is a treasure to be protected.

2. The Church and Its Leadership

The church is “the household of God” and “a pillar and buttress of the truth,” to be led by overseers and deacons whose qualifications center on tested, godly character, not merely gifting or ambition.

3. Order in Worship and Conduct

Paul gives instruction on prayer, on the conduct of men and women in the gathering, and on how believers of every kind are to live, so that the church’s life reflects the dignity of the gospel.

4. Godliness and Contentment

True gain is “godliness with contentment.” Paul warns against the love of money as “a root of all kinds of evils” and calls the rich to be generous, setting their hope not on wealth but on God.

5. Grace to Sinners

The “trustworthy sayings,” especially “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners,” ground the church’s message and Timothy’s ministry in the gospel of grace that saved even the foremost of sinners.

6. Guarding the Deposit

Timothy is charged to “guard the deposit entrusted to you” — the true faith — and to “fight the good fight,” keeping faith and a good conscience, and passing on the sound teaching he received.
