Chapters 1–3

Thanksgiving and Ministry

Paul gives thanks for the Thessalonians’ faith, love, and hope, recalls his gentle and sincere ministry among them, and pours out his joy and relief at Timothy’s report that they are standing firm under persecution.

  • Chapter 1 (c. AD 51): Paul thanks God for the Thessalonians’ faith, love, and hope, and for their turning from idols to await God’s Son from heaven.
  • Chapter 2 (c. AD 51): Paul recalls his gentle, sincere, and sacrificial ministry among them, like a mother and a father to his children.
  • Chapter 3 (c. AD 51): Anxious for them, Paul had sent Timothy, whose good report of their faith fills Paul with joy and thanksgiving.

Chapters 4–5

Living to Please God

Paul exhorts them to holiness and abounding love, comforts them about believers who have died with the promise of Christ’s return and the resurrection, calls them to be ready for the day of the Lord, and gives final instructions for joyful, prayerful, thankful life together.

  • Chapter 4 (c. AD 51): Paul calls them to holiness and love, and comforts them that the dead in Christ will rise at the Lord’s return.
  • Chapter 5 (c. AD 51): The day of the Lord comes like a thief; be watchful and sober, and abound in joy, prayer, thanksgiving, and holiness.
