When Samuel is old and his sons prove corrupt, the elders of Israel demand a king “like all the nations.” The LORD tells Samuel that in this they reject not Samuel but God as their king; still He grants the request, having Samuel warn them of the burdens a king will impose — taking their sons, daughters, fields, and a tenth of all they have. The people insist, wanting to be like the nations.
