1 John study section
1 John themes
1 John develops assurance of life, God is light, God is love, and belief that Jesus is the Christ.
1. Assurance of Eternal Life
John writes so that believers “may know that you have eternal life.” Genuine faith can and should have assurance, resting on Christ and confirmed by the marks of a transformed life.
2. God Is Light: Walking in the Light
Because “God is light,” those in fellowship with Him walk in the light, confess their sins, and are cleansed by Christ’s blood. To claim fellowship with God while walking in darkness is a lie.
3. God Is Love: Loving One Another
Because “God is love,” those born of God love one another, following the pattern of Christ, who laid down His life for us. “Whoever does not love does not know God.”
4. Belief That Jesus Is the Christ
True faith confesses “that Jesus is the Christ,” the Son of God come in the flesh. This right belief distinguishes the children of God from the deceivers, for “no one who denies the Son has the Father.”
5. Confession and Cleansing from Sin
Believers are not sinless, but if they confess their sins, God “is faithful and just to forgive us.” Christ is the propitiation for our sins and our advocate with the Father.
6. Overcoming the World and the Evil One
The children of God overcome the world through faith, for “he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” Belief in Jesus and the new birth give victory over sin, the world, and the devil.
