1 Corinthians 1

c. AD 55Paul rebukes the divisions in the church and proclaims Christ crucified as the power and wisdom of God.

After greeting the church and giving thanks for the gifts they were enriched with, Paul appeals against the divisions among them, as some say, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos.” He asks, “Is Christ divided?” and stresses that he was sent to preach the gospel, “not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.” For “the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” God chose the foolish, weak, and lowly things of the world to shame the wise, so that no one may boast except in the Lord.
