1 Chronicles study section
1 Chronicles related passages
1 Chronicles preserves the line and the covenant that lead to Jesus, the Son of David.
Within the Bible
- Previous: Second Kings ends with the exile of Judah and a flicker of hope in Jehoiachin’s release. First Chronicles retells the same history from the far side of exile, re-centering the returned community on David, the temple, and the promise.
- Next: Second Chronicles continues the account with Solomon and the kings of Judah, tracing the temple’s history from its glorious building to its destruction and the hope of return.
- Thematic Connections:
- 2 Samuel - The primary source for David’s reign, which Chronicles retells with a focus on worship, largely omitting David’s sins.
- Psalms 96; 105; 106 - Portions of these psalms form David’s song of thanksgiving in chapter 16.
- Matthew 1; Luke 3 - The New Testament genealogies that carry the line of Chronicles forward to Jesus.
Cross-Testament Connections
First Chronicles keeps and clarifies hopes fulfilled in Christ:
- The line to the Messiah: The genealogies preserve the line from Adam through David that leads to Jesus, the promised offspring (Matthew 1; Galatians 3:16).
- The everlasting throne: The Davidic Covenant of an eternal kingdom (17:11-14) is fulfilled in Christ, who receives the throne of David forever (Luke 1:32-33).
- The true temple: David’s devotion to building God’s house points to Christ, who builds the true temple, and to His people as God’s dwelling (Ephesians 2:21-22).
- A people of praise: David’s ordering of thanksgiving foreshadows the worship of the church, offering praise to God through Christ (Hebrews 13:15).
- Seeking and finding God: The promise that God is found by those who seek Him is fulfilled in Jesus, who receives all who come to Him (Matthew 7:7-8; John 6:37).
